Please place the body of your entry behind a cut.

You don't need to use the challenge word or phrase in your drabble, though you can if you like.
Each challenge ends when the new challenge is posted, but if you're a few days late that's still fine.

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

Road trip!!! This remains one of my favorite tropes/themes. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a great show all around, with terrific story writing, characters, and so many themes worth analyzing. But I also loved the traveling "road trip" aspect of it, and the way the main characters had adventures on Appa (the AtLA equivalent to on the road) as well as in the different places they landed.

Road trips and journeys feature in so many of my favorite classic movies, too, in all genres. It Happened One Night is a really fun romantic comedy in which the characters travel by bus then hitchhike, and get into all kinds of humorous situations on the way. The Searchers and True Grit (original and remake) are excellent westerns that use this trope. And of course, Hitchcock's great North by Northwest, though a thriller, features a chase halfway across the country by cars, train, cabs, and planes.

Of course there is always conflict and drama, and in more serious stuff, going on during the journeys. But I love the way the journeys bring out those conflicts and play a part in helping the characters resolve things and grow.

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

The fact that I can usually manage to see the humour in situations and don't get moody and sulky about minor stuff.

The fact that I'll try creating for any character once and give them all some attention rather than sticking to the same old favourites.

The fact that you always know where you are with me, I can't be doing with fake bullshit/not saying what I mean/expecting people to be psychic/not using my words type crap.

Challenge #8
Talk about your creative process.

A lot of my process involves staring at a blinking cursor and wishing for the will to write. Does that count? But seriously, it depends on whether I'm writing for myself or am working on something related to an exchange. The former hasn't happened in a while and I keep hoping for that to change but there is a difference. When it comes to writing for myself, a lot of my fics do end up starting with me daydreaming about a particular scene and then end up thinking of a whole story to work around it. Sometimes a 'what if' idea will hit me. Like currently, I've been brainstorming a 9-1-1 (TV) story about platonic Hanahaki, centered around Christopher & Eddie (with Buck/Eddie) and it really came to me because I was thinking about Hanahaki and that led to me wondering about the platonic version and from there, the Eddie & Chris plot bunny struck. I'm sure many other people can relate to having their ideas and motivation to write at the worst possible time too! When I'm in front of a screen it is easier to get distracted by my phone or other tabs.

When it comes to writing for other people, I'm working based of their likes and any possible prompts they may have so I tend to let it linger in my head before narrowing it down to an idea and then I just sit down and write.

If I want to get into a certain mood to write, I will often listen to the type of songs that will help a little. I can't write with music though unfortunately, or at least not when I'm not a deadline. If I have a lot of time, then possibly, but if I am wanting to focus, I need silence. Sometimes, I just need to force myself to write and then I put myself on timed increments and just turn my phone face down and write. It will be something like "okay, I'm going to write for about ten to fifteen minutes straight and then take a couple of minutes break". Once I can get started, I can usually just keep going. If I need a breather, I'll take the break, but often times, I might not need that first one or I'll take the first one and then won't need as many subsequently because I'll be into the story.

For me, it's easy to just fall off writing, even if I enjoy it, so I'm hoping to find some sense of consistency this year. I tried last year but I was a little all over the place so my goal to write a bit every day, just so I can keep it going and not get into the habit of not writing unless I need to. Also I am going to try to remember that not every idea has to be a big story and then just stick to a scene that I want to write, and hope that takes off some of the pressure. Maybe in doing so, some of my routines will change as well.

Hoping for a productive and fun (because this is a hobby and should be fun!) 2026 either way! :D

Today's writing project: The Daryan-in-prison sequel to Sonata. I have a rough draft, I have thoughts, I just need to sit down and start writing on it. Someone come yell at me in ~8 hours to see if I did that.

I also have at least three fills I could be working on for the kink meme and a couple I never crossposted here. So if I'm going to procrastinate on the sequel, I can do it with that.

(For anyone who saw the Snowflake post yesterday: this, too, is part of the creative process. Just Sit Down And Do It.)

Snowflake Challenge 2026 #5 Wish List

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your wishlist if you feel comfortable doing so.

It's never a comfortable task, but I've gotten better at it with practice.

1. If you do any remote energy work, Reiki, etc., I could use some sent my way. I hurt my ribs on Sunday (left side), and it's actually hurting worse now than it was. Might have been the fact that I did quite a bit of walking yesterday. I didn’t think walking would make it worse, but I might have been wrong.

2. Yeah, I don’t have any expectations for this one, but if anyone has ever thought about writing a Miami Vice fic… (preferably Sonny/Rico). Or art, or songvid. It’s hard being in such a tiny fandom with so little content.

3.  How about a bit of self-promotion? Check out my community, [community profile] vocab_drabbles It's a weekly prompt comm using mostly college-level and rarer words as inspiration. It's not just for drabbles anymore, as it grew beyond that quickly, but I haven't changed the name because I didn't want to confuse people (although it's a decision I've been contemplating) -- and Vocab Drabbles does have a ring to it. There are no deadlines, and we currently have fics in 115 different fandoms.

Talk about your creative process.

Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

lol, I don't exactly have a process. Sometimes I've tried the outline method for creating a story, and sometimes that even works. A lot of times it doesn't. Other times something sparks an idea and I'm able to just start writing.

A large part of the time I'm wracking my brain over what I'm going to write for the many bingo card prompts I've collected.

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

I kind of struggle with these things but I'll try. :D

1. I'm punctual. I like that I'm on time and even if I stress myself out a little when I work backwards, it's less stressful than the alternative. I don't mind being at the airport two hours early and I'm glad I can tell someone a time and unless there are certain unforeseen circumstances, I will be there then.

2. I'm fairly easy to talk to and am a good listener. I am best with at one on one or a couple of people, but I can carry a conversation if they're engaged and am happy to listen to other people/be a shoulder/offer advice if needed.

3. I'm a good baker and a decent cook. I can follow a recipe and can make the right modifications if needed and am aware of my limitations/can do what I know how to do well.
