March 6: Birth of the Firebringer. "Worst of the Pain"

Title: The Worst of the Pain
Day/Theme: March 6. no more curses you can't undo, left by fathers you never knew
Series: Birth of the Firebringer by Meredith Pierce
Character/Pairing: Jan
Rating: PG

Jan has spent his whole life trying to live up to his father. He had wanted so much for Korr to be proud of him. He had ached with shame under his father’s disapproval and has despaired that his own nature was so different from the warrior-prince Korr.

Then, he had met the renegade who sang on the heathen grasslands, with no trees or mountains to keep them from the stars. He hadn’t understood the stranger, but had admired him too. And there was guilt for that, because Korr despised the renegades, but there were things Jan was sure of now. He could dare to disagree.

He knew Korr didn’t want him courting Tek. Jan knew Tek was the one he wanted. Korr worked himself into a rage over it, but would never say why. He declared his grandchildren abominations and cursed them from his sight. Jan feared his noble father had gone mad.

His mother told him it was a secret that plagued the prince. She had secrets of her own.
It was only after the worst of the pain had passed that he had found out both of them. Tek was Korr’s daughter, born from a renegade on the plains. Tek had grown up under Korr’s eyes, but had called another her father. Jan was the son of a renegade Lell had danced with under the summer stars. Korr had not known.

The father he had suffered to please was not his. His own sire he had met once and never known. With nothing to measure his self against, all he had to be now was himself.
