She regrets nothing.
Kikyo’s hands work deftly, tying bandages together with a flourish and rearranging blankets over a barely breathing body. Her mouth stays set in a line; her eyes are blank, dead to all but her work.
“Priestess…” The man beneath her hands stutters out her title. “Thank… you…”
“I cannot save your life.” She splays her fingers across his chest.
“But you’ve made my last moments… so comfortable… pries—”
He doesn’t have time to finish. The man shudders, violently, and glows with a dangerous light. Something lifts up from his body, and then he doesn’t shiver anymore.
“Please,” Kikyo says, grasping the ball of light with hands that once knew how to heal, “Do not call me priestess. It is not who I am, not any longer.”
She regrets nothing.
