How he hated mirrors, now. It didn't seem right for anyone who understood a mirror to see a face like that looking back at them. But now that she was here, even his so-called servants were making fun of the way he never wanted to comb his hair.

The comb was from back when he was human, and it was going to break if he pulled it any harder. He hated this, trying to look good when he actually looked like a beast and always would. It made no sense, and surely she didn't care either.

Now he could hear her footsteps, and he backed away from the vanity table, tried to pretend he had been looking somewhere else, anywhere else. But he forgot to put the comb down, and she saw it.

"You're finally doing something about your hair?" she asked.

"It's not your concern," he replied, unable to make his voice as gruff as he really wanted to.

She came forward and took the comb out of his hand. Why was she always so pushy? Then she sat him down in front of the mirror as if he were a child

"You just have to do it slowly," she said, and began picking up his mane in small sections and combing through it.

It hurt, but he didn't fight her, or break the mirror. Maybe he was learning something. Then she took the ribbon from her hair and tied it onto his.

"You see?" she asked, putting her face near his as they looked into the mirror.

What he could see was that he looked like even more of a beast, compared to her, even if his hair wasn't quite as awful. But she looked so beautiful herself, and she was smiling at the image. He couldn't help wondering if he had a measure of beauty in her eyes, somehow.
