When Wyatt is only two, he realizes, although doesn’t fully understand the situation, that his father has gone somewhere, and the adults around him become edgy and tense.

Being a small child, he isn’t told what has happened. The situation is carefully hidden away from him behind cheerful smiles and celebrations. Life goes on and everything is normal. No one really changes, and yet, he can sense the change in the atmosphere. It’s barely palpable, but he knows it’s there. He sees it when his mother puts him and his younger brother to bed, and she stands by the doorway, watching them sleep, her eyes shining with unshed tears. She gets sadder as each day passes, but she tries very hard to let it not show because she loves her family unconditionally and she doesn’t want to burden them with her sorrow.

Being a small child, he doesn’t understand why his mother doesn’t express her feelings fully. He’d think it would make things a lot easier on her.

It isn’t until much later, when he grows up and starts his own family that he realizes why his mother never tried to show her feelings. It isn’t until he has a son of his own that he realizes that kids too can feel pain and grief as well as their parents.

It isn’t until much later that Wyatt finds out how courageous his mother really was and he wonders why he never saw it before.
