Title: Maybe This Year Will Be Better Than The Last

Spoiler Warnings: Implied spoilers for the Soul Society arc.
He’s drowning in the sweat from his brow and poisoning himself with the scent of sake. Neither alcohol nor immense exhaustion can cloud his thoughts; conversely, they sharpen their edges until he is too overwhelmed to consider them any longer.
He can’t believe that he’d believed. He’d let a smile rule his life, a sinewy hand guide him as it would a chess piece. He’d let blood that should have never been spilt coat the insides of his eyelids and blind him to anything that wasn’t his captain’s – his master’s – way.
And he’d shivered in a pool of his own blood, body cold to the bone, when he’d heard that he’d been lied to.
What would his parents have thought? They’d taken their noble birthrights seriously and expected him to do the same. If they’d have known, if they’d have seen the disgrace he’d become, he would have followed his master into worlds only the willing and estranged could go to, just to spare himself the shame.
From his current position on the floor of the tenth squad, he sits up, rubs the pain from his eyes and pulls the ball that is his discarded clothes as close as he can.
He shivers and thinks that even with his parents – his own past – dead and destroyed, maybe following Ichimaru would be the best choice for him still.
The poison purifies itself away.
He can breathe again.
He dresses and prepares to leave; if he still has the courage tomorrow, he’ll leave for good.
It is better to be played like a pawn than to feel lost and alone without the king.
