Daisuke used to think it was funny, watching J be taken apart. Antonia would hold up his detached arm, for example, and J would be awake, laughing about it, and Daisuke would laugh too.

But somehow J isn't as much of a machine to him anymore. Which makes no sense, a machine is exactly what J is, but it's still true. Daisuke has hugged him; he has kissed him one night after too much to drink, and while J and he have pretended none of that happened it did happen and it fills Daisuke's thoughts.

Daisuke reminds himself that J will always be what he is, that he cannot take a doll and give it a name and make it a real partner but it doesn't matter anymore.

Antonia has a box in her hands; J is asleep for this part.

"It's J's heart!" she calls out. "Do you want to see it?"

Daisuke smiles but he shakes his head. He can't look.
