“Do you believe in mermaids?”

Eileen glanced up at her friend from the steam of her black coffee. “Holly, what’s that got to do with him leaving?”

Holly gave a slow shrug, a wry smile lifting the corners of her hastily-applied red lips. “I guess I got tired of talking about him.”

Her friend sighed and nodded. “You’re right; he’s a jerk. But still, you have got to get him to take that blood test—he’s the father, he should be helping—“

The harsh sound of the coffee cup slamming on the marble countertop startled both of them.

Holly glanced idly at her watch. “I have to get back to work.”

“Okay… but I still don’t think you should be working. Not in your condition.” Eileen placed a hand over her friend’s. “Please, Holly. Don’t beat yourself up over this. He’s the loser here, not you.”

Holly nodded. “I know that.”

Eileen smiled. “That’s good.”

Before Eileen closed the door behind her, Holly called out, “hey, Eileen? Really, do you believe in mermaids?”

Eileen laughed. “Maybe if I ever saw one, I might!”

Later that evening, as her toes skimmed the cool black waters of the lake, Holly finally felt at peace. She’d been a wreck for weeks. But sooner or later, she had to stop crying. At least, that’s what everyone around her had told her; they had said it like a mantra. She was getting sick and tired of crying too, actually.

She touched the gentle slope of her stomach. “You too, huh?”

A soft splash answered her. Curious, she peered into the smooth waters. Slender fingers tried to part the blackness like a curtain, and upon doing so, Holly smiled.

A mermaid. So beautiful and ethereal.

“Can I join you?” Holly whispered, feeling drops of cold water dripping against her lips and chin.

The mermaid nodded, opening her white arms warmly and effortlessly against the weight of the water.

Holly was pleasantly surprised at how easily she was welcomed by the lake.

“It must be magic,” she thought to herself.
