Mary is dead. She was in a hospital, but not this one, which is a place of darkness and dirt and where he can only hope he is alone.
He can still remembering visiting her, when she was dying in that other place, the doctors shaking their heads with pity as they passed him. And the social worker, who asked him how he felt, and he told her he felt sad. He didn't tell her he felt tired and angry, trapped with an empty shell of a woman, because really he loved his wife.
But he visited less and less often, and he envied those whose loved ones were finally gone, who were spared the task of visiting their dying relatives and didn't have to come to that hospital anymore.
Then that last time, there was that nurse named... he couldn't remember. She had blonde hair, just like Mary, but she wasn't wasted away like Mary was, and when he was supposed to be looking at the wife he loved, lying there in the bed, he looked at this other woman instead. The nurse had breasts and hips and a swing in her walk and wasn't thin like Mary, would could barely eat anymore and hardly rose from the bed.
He cared for his wife, he told himself, but she had shriveled and grown ugly with illness and when he looked at that bed he wanted that nurse there, just for him, doing all those things that Mary wasn't good for anymore, and Mary could be gone. Then he stopped visiting, stopped looking at his wife. And then she died, when he wasn't there, and he never went back to that place again.
And now he is hiding in a corner, panting, weak and hungry and certain he will be dead soon. And that's when he sees her, just like in his memories, a nurse, with Mary's hair and a body like a real woman's and a face that doesn't matter.
But she isn't here to be his fantasy, she's running at him and screeching and she has something ugly and metal in her hand aimed at him. So he isn't going to get what he really wants from her either. He shoots her, watches her fall, sees the corpse twitch on the ground, the face even uglier close up even if the shape of her is still what Mary once was. James stares down and the useless body and tells himself to feel sick. Then he makes sure this one is really dead.
