[February 17] [Pan's Labyrinth] Round about the Roundabout
Title: Round about the Roundabout
Day/Theme: February 17 / spirits in the water
Series: Pan’s Labyrinth
Character/Pairing: Ofelia, Mercedes, mentions of others
Rating: PG-13
Spoiler Warnings: Spoilers for the whole movie.
She’s so close to the future, she can feel it. All she has to do is roll onto her stomach and then onto her other side, and she’ll go down the rabbit hole back home.
She thinks she can see what it’s like down there. The night now is dark, but at home, it’s nice and light all the time. There’s her father, the king, and her mother holding a baby and smiling. There’s the faun; he looks so proud of her, and he’s bowing.
She wants to turn around and see Mercedes and the doctor and the secret militia behind her, being where they should be, but then she remembers that she can’t move, can’t turn, and they’re all just out of reach.
But here she is. Here she is. She’s home.
It’s such a wonderful feeling that it’s stopped up the air in her lungs.
She’s forgotten how to breathe.
-
Mercedes pets Ofelia’s hair until she shudders and is still. Blood is trickling out from the girl’s nose; the moon peeks out from behind a cloud and makes otherworldly patterns dance across the puddle of red. They move (almost like people do) and then vanish with the moon (exactly like people do).
The last notes of the lullaby fade away and the night is still and real again.
