It's supposed to be beautiful. A light for a life, and a memory. But she remembers him anyway, what kind of idea is that; a year is nothing to a marriage.

If she tries hard enough she can still feel the texture of his shirt sleeve under her fingertips, the way it was when she used to touch him. And his voice is still there in her mind, the times he sang Shabbat songs or laughed... or complained; he was only human.

And she is still there in this house which is covered with his footprints because wherever she might go he still isn't there; it doesn't help.

Her hands shake as she reaches for a match.

They tell her any number of platitudes that are supposed to help, about divine plans and hurt and healing and why some go and others stay. But no one told her she would be quite this angry. And it makes no sense to have a bit of wax in a glass jar instead of a husband.

She puts the box of matches down. Suddenly she would rather burn this house down than light this candle.
