Belldandy and Keiichi had taken shelter deep within the branches of Yggdrasil. They felt the system shake to its roots. Outside, the stars had fallen from the sky, and the sun and the moon had been consumed by darkness.

The horn of Giallar still echoed through the Nine Worlds. It sounded to Keiichi's mortal ears like the klaxon horn of a crumbling lighthouse.

"They're going to die now," Belldandy said distantly. She did not weep; she had no tears left to cry. "Urd and Skuld... Peorth... Rind... even Hild and Mara. They're all going to die."

"Why did we survive?" Keiichi asked, trying not to think of his own family and friends. "Can the Ultimate Force survive the end of... everything?"

"That much I don't know," Belldandy said. "Yggdrasil was meant to shelter two mortals... but perhaps you and *I* are to be Lif and Lifthrasir."

Or Adam and Eve, Keiichi thought to himself.

"If only Ragnarök hadn't come so soon," Belldandy said.

"It doesn't matter," Keiichi said. "All the time in the world wouldn't have been enough."

And then, the battle of Vigrond began. Belldandy and Keiichi could only wait for the conflagration that would tear apart the universe.
