He was tense.

That wasn't entirely unusual. Most nights, it took awhile to coax Sasuke to relax and enjoy himself. But tonight...

Sakura allowed her lips to linger on Sasuke's neck for a moment longer before pulling away slowly.

"Sasuke-kun?"

Sakura let out a small yelp when Sasuke threaded his fingers in her hair and pushed her down for a kiss. It should have been a rare treat; Sasuke was more reactive than anything in sex. Sakura didn't mind at all getting to molest Sasuke, but sometimes she wished he'd take a more active role.

Quickly, before she changed her mind, Sakura pulled away from Sasuke's lips. As Sasuke's hands fell from her head, she grabbed his wrists and said, "What's wrong?"

For a moment it looked as if he wasn't going to say anything. He pressed his lips together and turned his head away from her. Instead, though, Sasuke said softly, so much so that Sakura could hardly hear his voice, "Do you feel them?"

"What?"

Sasuke didn't say anything right away. And then, suddenly, he said, "Close your eyes and clear your mind."

Sakura could tell it was important, so she did wordlessly.

"The ghosts never leave," Sasuke said. "Tonight they're stronger." Sakura could feel him shivering under her and his wrists were tense. She was tempted to sooth them with her thumb, but felt she should refrain from that for the time being.

"Why?"

Sasuke's only answer was a flinch and his wrists jerked in her hands. At the same moment, Sakura shivered; a chill had come over her suddenly.

"That's them," Sasuke said. "Most of the time, only I can feel them. But tonight..." His voice drifted off.

"Why are they strong tonight?" Sakura asked, shivering again, as goosebumps rose up her arms.

He didn't answer that. Instead, he carefully pulled his wrists from her hands, wrapped his arms around her waist and, as gently as he could manage, turned them around so that he had her pinned on the bed.

Sakura's eyes widened in shock, "Sasuke-kun?"

"I - You... You're cold," Sasuke said.

"But you're hurting," Sakura said, carefully stroking her hands up and down his arms.

He grabbed Sakura's wrists quickly and roughly, so much that a wince brushed across his face at Sakura's cry of shock. "I'm, I didn't mean to do that." He didn't let go of her wrists though.

"It's okay," Sakura said softly. And when his face softened she said asked, "Are they punishing you?"

Sasuke didn't say anything. Sakura took that as a yes.

"Tell me why, Sasuke-kun," Sakura said. And then added, making sure to look into his eyes, "Please."

"This is the anniversary of their deaths. They're not themselves and angry." Sasuke's voice was very distant.

"Does this always happen?" Sakura asked, imagining a little Sasuke being tormented through the night.

"Don't cry," Sasuke said frantically at the tears building behind her eyes. "It wasn't too bad before I left."

"You aren't going to let me help you, are you?" Sakura said and tried to hide how hoarse her throat was.

"Maybe you should stay with Naruto for the night," Sasuke said. Sakura knew it was his way of trying to make it up to her.

"No," Sakura said firmly. "I want to be here with you and when it's over." And, to herself, and maybe someday you'll let me help or share you pain with you.

Sasuke rolled off her and turned his back to her. Sakura watched him and waited until he was able to turn around and let her hold him.
