This place is not a place. And usually there is no time.
She wanders, pink sweater drawn against the cold, half-seeing glimpses of everything she remembers and a few things she does not.
Heaven's Night is empty, but there is a drink on the bar and she sips it. For just a moment she sees a message on the wall, her name, but then it's gone and it's an ordinary bar again... but still empty.
There is a hospital too. Isn't she supposed to be ill? But she feels all right, just cold, and a little lonely. Something red and white flashes past the hospital windows and she moves on.
It's the hotel she's looking for, and it's still there, old and stately with music playing. She loved this place, so long ago, when she came here with him. But he isn't here now.
Climbing the stairs, she gets dark ash on her fingers, but she can't figure out where it comes from.
The room is empty, and the bed is cold, and when she lies on it she forgets everything. On leaving she sees a dark-haired woman crouched by the door, and for a moment she hears a scream, sees flames.
The woman looks up. "He will come for you," she says.
"He won't," she replies.
"That's what he's here for, he'll save you!" she insists wildly, as if she knows.
But the woman in pink only shakes her head sadly. "No. He killed me."
The other woman sighs. "That doesn't mean he doesn't love you."
"If I see him, I'll tell him so."
And Mary Sunderland walks away, into the emptiness that is not quite right, and is still nowhere.
