She thought that maybe, if she waited long enough, someone would come for her. She did so much reaching and admiring; someone would be bound to take notice, and someday, he would reach back for her and slide a ring onto her finger and be the one to make her happy.

She found herself in a man who already wore a ring, but she liked to think that he would find that special reaching something in her too.

But she didn’t know at the time. She was young and pretty and helpless and harmless. She was cute. She smiled at all the right times in all the right places. She listened. She was obedient.

Neither life nor love was that simple and, looking back, not as simple as she.

She should have known, but she hadn’t, and now he was going to Tokyo. Even if he’d tried to reach out for her, her fingers had been slicked with innocence.

She simply couldn’t maintain that grip.
