This year it is the Day of Atonement and she is still alive, if this is life, through her sins. And this year she hears the voices promising to pray with the transgressors and she goes, walks into the synagogue dressed all in white, her skin as pale as her clothing.
No one notices her, for everyone gathers on this day, and even the poorest manage white garments somehow.
She looks around the room, thinking "I didn't kill your child this year, or yours, or yours..." Today she kills nothing, she starves herself like everyone else, and could that be enough?
They have a pious man chanting the prayers here, rather than a great singer, but it pierces her silent heart even more.
"And for the sin that we have sinned before you through harsh speech."
When was the last time she had spoken? Not even to trap a victim.
"And for the sin that we have sinned before you through inner thoughts."
If even thoughts condemn one to hell... most days she never thinks but of blood and where it will come from.
"And for the sin that we have sinned before you through wronging a neighbor."
They won't spell out the things that she does, for there are not prayers enough, but these were her people before they became her food.
Suddenly she hates everything, wants to throw the book to the floor and curse, some small show that she is indeed bound for destruction and not forgiveness. But she sits, and cries, and lets everyone think she cries from guilt and not from hunger.
"And for the sin that we have sinned before you through insincere confession."
She begs G-d to kill her, then and there, thinking that must be sincere enough. Then she laughs, and covers her mouth, hiding everything. Why does she think she can be saved? Clearly she has no soul, just this strange and monstrous body, and that is all. Even if she could somehow be written in the Book of Life, it would be no use. She has no name.
