In the daytime Rose Da Silva has a daughter. Sharon likes vanilla cake the best but doesn't lick the bowl. She likes to hear stories about princesses who slay dragons. When the sun is out she sits on the grass and draws pictures with smiles in them.

At night, Sharon gets lost somehow. All they know is that she sees a fire, and a devil, and she starts running. She's trying to reach a place called Silent Hill. When Rose or her father calls to her she does not know her own name.

Doctors see her, give her medicine to make her sleep and keep her awake and any number of other things, but it doesn't help. Prayer doesn't help, being a good parent doesn't help, littering her room with little amulets only makes her nervous. It's still Silent Hill she sees, and nothing else, and Rose hates the sound of the words even as they fascinate her.

And then all the nightmares are true, that her child is broken and can never be fixed. That they have brought in a child from somewhere else, who doesn't really belong to them.

Between the times that lost Sharon screams, Rose searches for Silent Hill, finds it as the name of a place burned from underneath long ago. No one has lived in Silent Hill for many years, since before Sharon was born. But they go, whatever Christopher says, and then maybe Rose will have a daughter again.

Rose no longer pretends that there is nothing real to fear. There is a fire after all, so perhaps there is a devil too. And if Christopher fears they will not come back perhaps he has a reason.

But a mother follows her child through Hell, even the child who comes from somewhere else. If Sharon belongs to the Hill, Rose will bring her there and bring her back whole.
