Growing up together, he had told her so many stories. Silly ones, of course, he'd been but a child himself after all. But she had still absorbed them like a dry sponge, mouth formed into a little circle and eyes shining. He might have fallen in love with her then, yes, that was probably the precise moment.

And tonight, she looked like Sleeping Beauty herself. Her beautiful hair was fanned out on the dark ground, hair the color of the sun. Her eyes were closed, and her lips were a dark red. A beckoning red, one he could not resist. He kissed her.

Her lips were wet, and very still under his. He pulled away, waiting for her to open her eyes. At first it seemed like the kiss hadn't worked, but then eyelids fluttered and blue eyes met his. What was it the prince had said in the fairy tale, after his kiss had broken the evil spell? He couldn't remember, but it made no difference. Her beauty took his breath away, so surely he couldn't have managed to speak even if he had wanted to.

Then, odd sounds filtered though his consciousness. Loud, horrible sounds that tore the perfect moment to shreds. Hands grabbed him, pulling him away from his one true love. He distantly heard voices speaking to him, but couldn't understand what they were saying. They were crowding her, touching her neck and then frantically pushing on her chest.

And then something in him clicked, finally falling into place. Her lips were red and wet because of blood. Her eyes, that he had thought shined just as bright as when he had told her stories, were in fact only glazed over from fear and pain. He watched as the man giving her CPR stood back up, shaking his head in a gesture that could only mean one thing.

As he let out a scream his head was filled with single thought: This wasn't how the story was supposed to end.
