Outside, there is a storm. Outside, there is a world in death throes. Ocean water buries cities. Disease ravages those left. Funeral pyres and gunfire illuminate the darkened skies. Humanity's greed has swallowed the earth whole at last.
It is quiet here. Nothing but the hum of computers and the clack of Drusilla's fingers on the keyboard. Compared to the world outside the lab, it is heaven. Or perhaps it is purgatory. Limbo? Little windows of numbers are scattered over the LCD. Drusilla's responsible. She likes to keep track of her progress. Or maybe she is merely morbid.
She doesn't know whether to be proud or ashamed as the death count continues to pile up. It is the salvation of earth, a noble endeavor no matter how you look at it. Salvation of humanity in the long run, too. Depending on how at you look at it.
She had a choice many years ago.
They called her a genius. They called her the messiah. They called her the anti-Christ. They destroyed everything that ever mattered to her while expecting her to do their bidding.
All they wanted was her baby. The fruit of her labors. The virus.
The ultimate weapon. The keystone of utopia.
She was no Paris. She had tossed the apple to Demeter and walked away. Damn the consequences.
