[February 4] [Kingdom Hearts] While We're Quietly Losing Control
Title: While We’re Quietly Losing Control
Day/Theme: February 4 / before the world was created
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Character/Pairing: Riku, Sora
Rating: G
Author’s Note: Operates under the assumption (or, if it’s stated somewhere that I missed, fact) that Riku was the original Keyblade master.
It was strange, talking about it at first.
“Did you see it, Sora?”
“See what?” The younger boy had fruit smeared on his face. He was at that age where the mess was seen more as adorable than unpleasant.
“The keyhole. It was in our secret place. Did you see it?”
Sora tilted his head in confusion and licked his lips. “No. I think I’d remember if I saw it…”
Sora went on eating, but Riku wasn’t feeling so hungry anymore.
They went back to the secret place three or four times a week at least, and every time, just before they left, Riku would turn around and there it would be, glowing gold and taunting.
“I’m not afraid of you.” Riku would ball his tiny fists and narrow his round blue eyes. The keyhole, of course, wouldn’t respond, but it made Riku feel strong and capable anyway.
-
It was strange, talking to Sora about these things.
“You’ve had that dream again, huh, Riku?”
“Yeah.” They were older this time. Riku’s arms were more defined by muscle, and Sora had grown a foot in three years.
“What’s it like?”
“Dimmer. As in… that light I keep seeing. Every time I have that dream, the light fades a little more.”
“Hmph… weird.” Funny how Sora still spoke with his mouth full.
Riku didn’t like to bring it up. Even when he was the one that initiated the conversation, he always kept a few details to himself. That the light he saw surrounded the worlds he wanted to visit. That he could see these worlds, and reach out to touch them, but he’d be blocked by a door, and all he could grasp was its handle.
He’d held a key once, too. That had made him even more frustrated, because it reminded him of the keyhole he’d seen when he was little.
One day he fell asleep and dreamt of worlds surrounded by black that he could visit at any time.
There were no impassable doors, no useless keys, and Riku woke up feeling a surge of power and the taste of air on his tongue.
-
When the storm came, Riku reached out and embraced the dark as fully as he could.
Sora arrived, and soon he had to explain to him why he was going.
Funny how that conversation was the least strange of all.
