Mary had never wanted children, not even before she got sick. Or was is that he didn't want children, and Mary had said "Yes, James" in that way she had, the way that meant she was giving in but not because she loved you or wanted you, but because she just was; she didn't care.
But now he was a... no, he was not a father. A guardian? Something. He had no idea, and usually he had no idea why. Sometimes he woke in the night certain Laura would go to the police now, and whether they believed her or not about Mary, long dead and rotted away, they would certainly wonder what she was doing in his house. But when she looked at him with those odd eyes, nobody's eyes, he was pretty certain the police didn't really have records of Laura. She never mentioned what had happened to her real parents, or what she had been sick with in the hospital, or why no one had noticed when she left.
He dropped her off at school every day but he never saw her go in, and the neighbors never seemed to mention that he had a child, or talk to him much at all, really. Soon he would reach out for something and his hand would go through and he...
No, he had made it out of that town, damn it. He made it out and he was here and he adopted Laura just like Mary would have wanted him to if she had lived.
And Laura was all right, she was his daughter, sort of, she was just... weird. Like when she would sit there, drawing a picture of nothing, and telling him something Mary had said.
"There's a park down the street, isn't there? And you and Mary used to have picnics and kiss on the blanket until the police told you to move on."
Why the hell would Mary have said that to a little kid? But she must have, or how would Laura know?
"You loved Mary once, James." She says it as if it's true.
"Of course I did," he says, as if it's true.
"You're lying."
He tries to hit her then, but she just laughs, laughs like when he asked her if she was afraid of monsters.
One morning over her breakfast cereal she says, "I would have had a mother if it weren't for you, James."
"Shut up!"
"What did it feel like when you pushed that pillow down and she tried to get away? Couldn't you have just given her an overdose from all those pills?"
"The doctors would have--- Shut up!"
Laura never has nightmares. He wonders sometimes if she really did see the monsters, but they just didn't bother her. It's James who has the nightmares, not even of the red pyramid or Maria or Eddie or anyone but Laura, who never grows up and never leaves and probably wouldn't die even if he dared to kill her.
Tonight she draws a picture that is really a picture, a picture of a knife. And all James wants is that damn knife, which could never touch this child but might give him release from a place worse than Silent Hill.
