She does not know them. She does not belong in their band of makeshift heroes. She is an outcast in a group of outcasts. She is alone and has no one to whom she can give a sliver of trust, no one to go to and look at in the eye and say to, “Thank you for not making me doubt you.”
There is no one – nothing – she can trust.
But this figure is something, and when he lifts his hand and Kohaku’s head moves along with it, that means something to her too. This shadowed one is speaking the words and planting the seeds in her head. He is making the demands and extending the offer.
He is the one keeping the miasma from curling dangerously around Kohaku’s neck.
Her path is clear.

Tetsusaiga is lighter than she’d imagined. Once outside the hut, she looks the weapon over and gives it a half-hearted swing. It is a good sword. It will serve her brother’s keeper well.
