What was it that kept him here?

"This city is a prison," Zuko had once told his Uncle.  "I don't want to make a life here".

And truthfully, Zuko had done all he could to stay uninvolved in the daily life of Ba Sing Se.  While his Uncle revelled in the people he met and the tea that he drank, Zuko could only serve tea with pursed lips and hope it would be all over soon.  He wanted to get out as soon as possible.  He wanted to go home.  Back to his real home, where he truly belonged.  Back to the Fire Nation.

But his father nor Azula would ever welcome him home.  He was stuck.  A banished prince in a prison-city.  He had nowhere to go after he broke out.  But he'd think of something.  He always did, didn't he?

And then he met her.

Jin was his first date, his first kiss, the first girl that had ever taken notice of him since he'd received his immortal scar which plagued him wherever he went.  Girls would giggle and dare their friends to talk to him, until he turned around, revealing his burned visage.  Then, they would all grow quiet and slowly walk away, pained expressions on their faces.  He didn't mind.  He didn't need women.  He was after his throne, his prize, his Avatar.

But Jin was different.  She liked him simply for the way he looked, which was rare.  She didn't try to fool him with any of that, "I like you for your brains or personality" crap.  He knew very well that his conversational skills couldn't woo a turtle-duck and that whenever he tried to talk to girls, he usually sounded as though he wanted them out of his life, and fast.

So, despite his scar, Jin had taken a physical interest in him.  And she had asked him out.  He hadn't exactly said yes, but he found the invitation accepted for him.

And then their date.  Another thing surprised him about Jin.  She found him interesting.  At least interesting enough to show her favorite fountain to.  And then, he surprised himself by firebending for her.

He couldn't stand to see her disappointed.

Is that why he kissed her back?  Because he didn't want to disappoint her?  Or was it because, despite the angry and tormented mask he had always worn, Jin liked him anyway.  And she liked him for reasons that he hadn't experienced in a long time.

She liked him because he was attractive.  She liked him because he was kind.  She liked him because he kissed her.

He wondered how it would feel to go out with Jin again.  And then, he stopped himself, remembering how desparately he had wanted to get out.  How Ba Sing Se was nothing more than a prison and he was trying to pick the lock.

But, for some odd reason, he felt rooted to the spot.  Something was attaching his feet to this place.

Had he found a reason to call this place "home"?
