Her cheeks feel stale and brittle. Her tears have since dried, and the paths they took down her face are no longer obvious. She is shaking, but the guard by her door assumes it’s from the cold.
What he cannot see are her hands, which have turned red from the grip on the piece of paper she holds.
Her eyes are down, and they trace the words again and again. She runs a finger beneath each line, and it smudges the ink slightly but no matter; she’s already memorized every character, every word.
The moon peeks in through a window. It casts a shadow behind her that lengthens as she rises.
She asks for the guard’s attention, and days of watermelon lunches and summers in the sunlight pass briefly through her mind.
But it is too late, for she’s already speaking the incantation.
Her eyes are dark, but still they shine, like shards of glass catching the moon.
