Kanzeon Bosatsu appeared in a puff of jasmine-scented smoke, lounging on Jiipu's hood.

"All right," se said grimly. "Talk."

Hakkai smiled gamely. "I'm afraid that theology isn't my strong suit, Merciful One . . ."

The Bodhisattva jerked a thumb at the three snoring figures sprawled in Jiipu. "Explain to me precisely why they've been asleep for the last three days and missed several entertaining -- that is, morally improving encounters."

"Trypanosomiasis?" Hakkai suggested hopefully.

Kanzeon Bosatsu snorted.

"But they look so peaceful and happy. And they're so much easier to transport."

"Hard luck," the Bodhisattva said, and vanished as the passengers woke up.
