To multiply friends is to multiply weaknesses. It's a losing bargain, where you not only have more people that can betray you, but more people who will be hurt when the inevitable happens and the sky falls and people die.
She could try to be a villain. But there is that note of mockery which she cannot help, that vein of the ridiculous which so often makes her lean back and smile when she should be walking away.
Yet the Going Merry, with its impossible arithmetic of one for all and all for one, makes all her calculations in error.
