There once was a time when she would have sacrificed anything for her friends. In fact she had already done that... she had sacrificed her lover, her future, her hope, and even her life... but it had never seemed like enough for her friends. They had wanted more from her, which was something that she hadn't been ready to give.
So she left, just like Angel left her, she left her friends; although, she hadn't bothered to tell them that she was leaving. She knew that she should feel guilty, that her friends had probably been really worried when they discovered that she was gone, but she couldn't seem to find it within herself to be concerned about their fears.
Instead she had made a commitment to herself to become someone else. Someone who could get the job done and not worry about what others thought, and she was pretty sure that she had accomplished that goal. It had started out innocently enough, she had needed a break from Sunnydale, from the daily life that meant nothing to her, and friends that had started to get on her nerves. So she had packed her bags and left to visit her Aunt Narcissa; the same aunt who her mother had forbid her from ever visiting, the aunt her mother had called an ice-queen with no feelings. She was pretty she that Dawn's implanted memories wouldn't include dear Aunt Narcissa, but even if they did she knew that Dawn would never consider that Buffy would ever visit that part of the family.
Yet, at the time it had been the best option for her, and despite the rare contact between them, her aunt had welcomed her into her family. She had provided a shelter for Buffy, but more importantly Aunt Narcissa had taken it upon herself to teach Buffy things that none of her friends would have ever thought to learn, they simply would not have seen the value in the lessons. To be fair she had been a bit wary in learning from her aunt, but her aunt was very persuasive and casually explained to her how each lesson could be used.
The time spent with her aunt showed her how she could wield her body into a weapon, how to hide her emotions, and how to act properly for various situations. After a year under her aunt's guidance she knew how to seduce men, how to host parties, how to blend in with high society, and how to knowingly turn a blind eye on certain activities without feeling any guilt.
Buffy knew that none of her old friends would recognize her now. She was in essence a different person, no longer was she a Summers but rather she had become a Black and more importantly a Malfoy through her aunt's marriage. The old Buffy might have done anything for her friends, but the new Buffy would do anything not only for her family, but also for herself.
