Himiko had fallen asleep reading a fairy story about a boy who sang for joy, a golden basin and a diamond lance, and a giant in a castle.
"Will you tell me what next to do?" Peronnik asked.
"Yes," replied the dark lady, "if you will take me across the river."
She could not understand why it should make her melancholy. Fairy stories were supposed to have happy endings. This one did.
". . . Are they not hidden in a dark underground chamber which no key can open?"
"The flower that laughs," she answered, "opens every door and lights the darkest places."
