[Nov. 28, 2006][Suikoden] Father-like
Title: Father-like
Day/Theme: Nov. 28, 2006 father figure
Series: Suikoden (A largely original story though, related to my "epic" fanfic Murasaki Fuji no Shita ni Kuni)
Character/Pairing: Kiisan and his father, Han Li, Hirano
Rating: G
With spoilers for my own tale! *laughs*
Kiisan could remember a few general things about his father, like that he was never quite clean shaven and that his messy hair was a dark, muddy brown. And his father had been tall. At least he had seemed tall when Kiisan was a small child. He was the one who first called him "Kiisan." He liked to wittle by the fire in the winter.
What sort of work had his father done? He didn't know. To live in Finnel Village he must've been a farmer. Had he fought alongside Falina's father in the earlier skirmishes with Medina? How had his father and mother met? He didn't know any of these things. What exactly had happened to his father? That too was lost in the mists of his mind.
Sometimes he though Han Li was probably a lot like his father. He was older and knowledgeable. He provided Kiisan was plenty of support. Of course, he didn't imagine his father had been that erratic, and he was almost sure he had a less illustrious past than Han Li had...
The appearance of the boy called Rolan solidified the notion in Kiisan's mind that Han Li was like a father to him. He was being called upon to be a leader and more and more pressure was put on him, as well as the voice of the True Rune speaking to him- he felt he needed support and guidance more than ever. But Han Li was often occupied with Rolan, Kiisan was ashamed of it, however he had to admit to feeling a little jealous of the young boy. He was even more embarrassed when Sasshalai assured him that he was doing fine on his own and didn't need advice from anyone.
Kiisan was sure that he was still just a frightened child inside, needing someone older and wiser to protect him. He was not willing to let go of the hands he held and stand on his own. It was truly fortunate that as the new government was being established Chief Priest Hirano stepped up to fill the role of "father" in his life. As Kiisan knew little of the church hierarchy, Hirano had plenty to teach his heir. He was a very old man, but had longer many years for a son of his own. Each man filled a very real need in the other.
Hirano was the last "father" Kiisan would need. By the time he became chief priest and established the new solar calendar, he was man enough to stand on his own. He was the head of the church and the state. At last he had grown into his big name- Hikusaak. He was the father of his country. From now on he would be the father and others would be the sons and daughters.
