[Nov. 27, 2006][Original] Straight to the Source

Title: Straight to the Source
Day/Theme: Nov. 27, 2006 why should I leave you, to wound myself upon the sharp edges of the night?
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Arthur, Jason, and others
Rating: G

The early spring night was almost black. Connor kept his hands touching the outer wall so as not to wander too far astray while Nalili and Laurie nearly bumped into each other several times. Even Arthur, usually so light on her feet, stumbled over a potted plant.

"I think this must be the right courtyard," Florian whispered as he pointed at the arched windos of gold-colored glass from which flowed a honeyed light. The group of mismatched travelers halted quickly, leading Laurie to step on Connor's foot. The guardsman cringed with pain, but did not cry out.

"Go on, Arthur," Rose urged softly and gave the red-haired woman a gentle push forward.

"Me?!" Arthur gave an outraged whisper, "Why me?!"

"Because you're the best at explaining things," Florian answered.

"I'm the wife of an enemy general; he wouldn't trust me!" Rose replied.

"Fine, fine, have it your way," Arthur grumbled. She brushed a hand over her clothes in an impossible attempt to smooth out her shirt, then proceeded forward out of the shadows into the festive light. Arthur was afraid to knock on the glass-paneled door, so instead she tapped it with her fingernails.

"What was that?" gasped Jason, hopping to his feet and straightening his nightshirt. The tiny tapping came again and he stepped into his slippers, scuttling cautiously toward the glass. He opened the door just a crack, letting the milky light slide across Arthur's face. The new king stared in surprise.

"Excuse me, Your Highness, but we need to talk," the unknown woman insisted as she pushed against the door and stepped into his quarters.

Jason gaped at her. Since he had been coronated he had encountered few who would be so forward with him. It was more like his days on the battlefield. He was fascinated. "Come in," he stammered, although she was already inside.

"I'm Arthur Fletch," the red-head introduced herself quickly before launching into her story. It was a twisted tale, but she did her best to summarize the circumstances leading up to her meeting with the king. Jason listened attentively to every word, hoping that the story would go on forever so this intriguing woman would never disappear back into the night.

"So, what do you think?" she asked as she concluded her tale.

"I..." he mumbled, trying to compose his thoughts, "I think I need a little more time to think about this."
