The Experimenters carefully attached the devices to his head and to his chest. The Head Experimenter himself watched the preparations.

The man understood that it would be the last journey, and did not know how he knew.

He could not tell her what he had become now. He had slipped through time, a series of photographs and experiences occupying the same space. The human mind balks at time travel, for it means to be in two places at once, a paradox. He had lived twice in the same moment, and he could not remain unchanged. The power the Experimenters had given him had entangled him into Time itself.

The Past and the Future rise up to greet him, and he is already slipping away, to the jetty at Orly.
