[Nov. 20, 2006][Original] King's Bride
Title: King's Bride
Day/Theme: Nov. 20, 2006 the village awaits the new moon
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Arthur Fletch and some villagers
Rating: G
The country awaited a new queen like a farming village in the midst of drought eagerly awaited a new moon and its accompanying rains. The new king was still not very secure in his power and the popularity a likable bride would bring could not be underestimated in his quest for support from the citizens.
Arthur chatted about the king's prospects with other patrons of the Hollow Oak Tavern. She was very fond of the mushroom tarts they served at the restaurant. With a plate balanced on one knee she chattered noisily to be heard above the din. "The Belioso have too much power now! He should marry an Atien to preserve the balance!"
"But if he does that, the Belioso might withdraw their support," countered an old, white-bearded man, shaking a finger knowingly at the brown-eyed woman.
A plump serving woman turned to the regulars at the counter and shook her head, "Nae, ferget Belioso. King doesn't need 'em. They didn't put him in power, not like the dynasty 'fore last." She rubbed her calloused hands on the front of her cream-colored apron, "I think he should marry a woman from the Associated Provinces. Who could take much offense at that? And it's make 'em have a wee bit more pride."
"You might have something there, Ma'am," Arthur conceded. She took a large bite from one of the tarts and a sticky sauce ran down her chin, which she wiped away with the back of her hand. She munched noisily on her lunch while the old man and the serving woman debated the merits of the various Associated Limelle Provinces.
"Most important really," the wrinkled man decided, "Is that she's local and not some foreigner like king before last's Martay bride. I never cared for her and neither did anybody else. Just 'cause she came from over the Martay Wall, thinks she's so great..."
"I agree," the round-faced woman nodded vigorously and went back to her work.
Arthur shrugged noncommitally and continued enjoying her meal. Foreign or not mattered very little to her.
