[Nov. 14, 2006][Suikoden] Fleeing the Conflagration
Title: Fleeing the Conflagration
Day/Theme: Nov. 14, 2006 thieves in the temple
Series: Suikoden
Character/Pairing: Sasarai and Chatka
Rating: PG
Chatka, Sasarai assured himeslf, was much more of a thief than he could even pretend to be. As they emerged from the towering conflagration he coughed and rubbed his eyes, which watered from the smoke, but he managed to keep a tight grip on the genealogical scroll he had promised to bring Fatima. Afterall, he was not stealing the scroll, he was only borrowing it (assuming there would be any sort of library left to bring it back too...).
Catty Chatka, on the other hand, carried a hefty bag of loot over her shoulder. Her hair was frizzed somewhat by the heat and her face and clothes were smudged with ash, but she still had a huge, white, toothy grin on her round face. Sasarai wondered what was in her bag. Oddly enough, the items, although they were being stolen, were also being saved. There were special fire warding spells in parts of the Temple. He hoped they would be enough...
"So long, old pal!" chirped Chatka, hopping through the scorched grass after the bishop. "'Til we meet a-ga-in!" Her song was quickly lost in the darkness of the smoky night.
"Hey now! Let's go!" she urged Sasarai who stood with head bowed, praying for the saftey of all who had been inside. "Come on, come on, I don't want anybody to see me with the loot! We'll get searched!" she squeaked.
He nodded in assent and headed out of the Temple grounds with the spunky thief skipping alongside him. There were no guards at the gates. Presumably they had run off because of the fire, either to aid the Temple dwellers or to flee in fear. The Houenkai-Tei was eerily quiet aside from the snapping of splintered wood consumed by flame. Battered and worn down by the frightening experience, Sasarai and Chatka hurried into the Aikora-Tei and despite Sasarai's obvious marks or rank- his hat and robes- they melted into the curious crowd. The ebb and flow of wide-eyed, sleep-rimmed faces provided safe cover for their flight to the north.
Sasarai shuddered with fear when he heard the clanging bells tolling, "Fire, fire, fire," for he knew that he had left and he could never again go back.
