[August 11] [Near Dark] A Little More Pride

Title: A Little More Pride
Day/Theme: August 11th/I claim proud kinship with your race and blood
Series: Near Dark
Character: Severen
Rating: R for language

Humanity was a cesspit, everyone trying to shove their way to the top, climbing on the heads of everyone else as the whole stinking mess just sank deeper and deeper. Bunch of animals. Fuck it, he was an animal too, but at least he knew it. It wasn't right, the way people pretended they were outside the natural order of things.

Severen supposed most people probably thought he was outside the natural order of things too, if they believed in things like him at all. Showed what they knew, didn't it?

Not that he hated humanity, mind. Hell, he loved the fuckers - they had such great taste! (Even in his head, that was groan-worthy; that joke was older than he was.) He didn't even mind that attitude of theirs, thinking they ruled the world - hell, that little delusion made them a hell of a lot easier to hunt. Anything that got him a meal was o-kay by him!

Nah, humanity was great. But not perfect. Perfect meal, sure, but perfect race? Hah! They had their flaws, and then some; he remembered being one of 'em well enough to be damn sure of that. He wasn't perfect either, he was clear on that, but this was the thing - there was no way in hell that he could look at the things he was eating and think they were better than him. Just wasn't happening.

Severen was good at what he did. He'd been around for a long time, and for most of that time, he'd been having fun. Meeting Jesse had been the best thing that ever happened to him. And everyone that'd joined up with them since - Diamondback, Mae, even the little boner - far as he was concerned, any one of 'em was worth a thousand faceless humans, any day. (Which he figured was a good thing, considering the number of people they'd killed.) This life they lived? It was good. Hell, it was fucking fantastic.

So when this new fucker got turned, only to whine about it every damn step of the way? Severen didn't really appreciate that.

High and mighty little brat, turning his nose up at making a kill; it wasn't right, him treating Mae like that. Who the fuck did he think he was? Too good to get his own meal? At the end of the night, a human was still dead; far as Severen could see, the only difference between Caleb feeding off Mae instead of feeding directly from a human like he ought to was that this way the little fucker was hurting Mae, too. And Severen didn't like people hurting his family.

As they spotted the isolated roadhouse, he figured it was about time the boy learned to take a little more pride in what he was. Best way to do that, Severen reckoned, was to show him how to have a little fun.
