It always happens after the pillow fights have died down and the laughs have dried up, after the crease on Ender's large forehead flattens and the crooked smile of Valentine straightens. Ender pretends to be afraid; he grips the faded pattern of Valentine's pajamas, kneads the fabric between his fingers as he presses closer. He feigns fear, anxiety dribbling from his barely open mouth as he murmurs insecurities to her heartbeat. But Valentine finds it all very funny that the only place the savior of the human race seeks shelter is in the fuzzy pajamas of a teenage girl.
