[August 11] [I Claim Proud Kinship With Your Race and Blood] [Naruto]

Title: Into the Gray
Day/Theme: August 11: "I claim proud kinship with your race and blood"
Series: Naruto
Character/Pairing: Kurenai pov/ NaruHina
Rating: PG for angst

Kurenai was surprised when the day finally came--the day Uzumaki Naruto pledged himself entirely to Hyuuga Hinata. She wasn't sure if she was more surprised that Naruto had finally noticed and returned Hinata's feelings, or by how the day had come much sooner than she imagined.

It was a silent declaration, which was incredibly unusual for the orange-clad boy. (No, he was a man now.) His eyes were a blue focus that was somehow different from any intensity he had ever shown before, and in them, Kurenai could see his resolve, his devotion, his oath. She'd never believed in wishing, only doing; but in that instant, her heart burst into a million desires. She wished she could stop him; she wished she could help him; she wished she could take his place. But more than anything, she wished Hinata was awake to see this.

With promises still steeled in his eyes, Naruto turned his back to Hinata who lay bleeding and unconscious in her arms. "Take care of her."

From the mists, Kurenai could feel the enemies' bodies, hot with the intent to kill, circling closer to their position, and not for the last time cursed her broken hand that kept her from offering supportive jutsu. "Naruto..."

"Go. Keep her safe." The brief hitch in his voice made it almost sound like a plea.

With no solution, no other options, and no choice, Kurenai hefted her student gently onto her shoulder. Turning toward the village, she only hesitated a moment as she imagined tear-stained cheeks and red pearl eyes. "She'll be waiting for you," she heard herself say in an eerie, solid voice that sounded nothing like how she felt.

A low, dry chuckle. "Tell her that after this... there'll be no more waiting."

It wasn't a promise, but it wasn't a goodbye; and there wasn't any more time to get a more satisfying answer. With a silent shifting of her weight, Kurenai vanished into the gray. And with a last glance back, so did Naruto.

Notes from the Authoress

Man, had a hard time putting this one together. Originally I had an entirely different idea that didn't involve Naruto or Hinata at all, but then I changed over to using them as the tie to the theme. On top of that however, I had no intention of it getting this dramatic but... that's how it wrote itself.

I know we don't need to take claims, but I, personally, will be challenging myself to write Kurenai-centric drabbles for this community. I can already tell I won't be writing every day, but I'll get in when I can. (By no means will I be limiting myself to Kurenai however.)

Aaaaaaah, this was good exercise again. Thanks for reading!
