"Don't go, don't go, don't go..." she crooned, closing her eyes and smiling a little, as she enjoyed the sound of the distant music. She tilted her head to the side and sighed dramatically.
"Is that one of your songs?" the bishop asked, not raising his eyes from the document he was amending.
The ebony-haired woman stuck out her lower lip and furrowed her brow in a frustrated pout. Was he actually curious or was he merely being polite? She didn't like his tone of voice. He sounded far away wrapped up in the world of papers and politics, a world she could see, but not enter. And if she was going to be here in his office, she wanted him to pay attention to her. It wasn't like she didn't have anything else to do.
"No, it's not one of my songs," she sniffed, turning away from his direction toward the window. The glass was tinted a soft shade of teal blue, giving the singer the sensation that she saw the Temple District through water. The curves of the whitewashed buildings bent and wobbled through the glass and sunlight shone off their ornaments. "I just like it."
"Hmm," the Crystal Valley bishop responded. He nodded his head slightly.
"Sasarai?" she ventured, hoping the use of his name would lead to more full interaction. She did not turn around because she was still somewhat peeved by his single-minded focus on the paper before him.
"Yes?" he asked, his voice raising questioningly in a manner similar to the way she had spoken.
"Who's playing that music anyway? Where's it coming from? Somebody hire a band?"
Sasarai carefully set down his quill pen and got up from his desk. Evangeline watched him over her shoulder as he moved around several stacks of books to join her at the window. He squinted and looked out at the grounds of the Temple, as well as past the walls to the other visible areas of the district. They could both hear the swell of the music, but no players were in sight. "Sounds close by," he observed.
"So you have no idea?" she pressed him further.
The youthful-looking man shrugged and a clever smile crossed his face, "Well, maybe I know something about it."
Evangeline hopped up from the edge of the wooden chest she had been sitting on and stared into the short man's eyes. "Something? I bet you know all about it!"
"I thought that was one of your songs," the bishop admitted.
She waved her hands at him emphatically. "I'm talking about the band, Sasarai!"
"You always want to have a good time," he lectured her in a mock stern fashion, "You always want to be doing something fun."
She rolled her dark eyes at him, "I know that. Tell me about the band!"
The bishop winked. "Go downstairs."
Evangeline rushed off without a second thought, out of Sasarai's quarters, around the corner, and down the stairs. In the middle of the hallway were assembled several of Sasarai's staff and some of the Temple guards, playing instruments. They were not half bad. A few confused clerics stood in the hall, wondering what the noise was all about. They stared at Evangeline as she appeared, curious to see if this woman might provide an explanation.
"Finally," Dios muttered, as he touched his bow to the violin's strings.
"Wow!" Evangeline gasped in awe.
As Sasarai slowly reached the bottom of the staircase, Evangeline took a deep breath and launched into the song. The bishop was rather pleased with himself for thinking up the idea. Evangeline was so surprised. And when she sang she looked so happy.
He felt it had been worth it, even after he was lectured by the Chief Priest for making a disturbance.
