[August 11] [Naruto] Ties

Once, a lifetime ago, Hyuuga Hizashi saved the life of a newly promoted chuunin. In times of war and self-sacrifice, it was generally frowned upon to compromise a mission for any reason, even to preserve human life. They taught in the academy: sacrifice one for the sake of many. A humble notion, Hizashi thought, pulling the boy from the heat of battle.
He is, Hizashi told the Hokage later, just a boy, after all.
And the boy grew up, as boys often do, in his own, queer way. He perfected techniques, wondrous ones, and they called him a genius. (A strange one, but a genius nonetheless.) His heart broke and mended a thousand times over, but never, not once, not even for a moment, did he ever forget the face of the man who once, a lifetime ago, saved his life.
"Hyuuga Neji," he said in the present lifetime. Whether he was addressing the boy or a ghost, he didn't quite know. "I am Maito Gai. I will be your teacher."
