[October 7] [Original] candles ward off the cold
Title: candles ward off the colds
Day/Theme: October 7 / a light called you
Series: Original - Halcyon’s Mandate
Character/Pairing: Audric
Rating: G
Word Count:
Audric Drynwyn had been accused of glibness more than once. He never did deny it, though absently, he would think the label absolutely inappropriate. Surely, he wasn’t the most expressive individual in the world, but he did have the emotional range of a normal human being—pathetically inferior to his intellectual prowess, true, but normal, nonetheless.
He was. . . disconcerted, to put it mildly. Years of exposure to various prophecies and predictions had calmed his senses into a sort of fatalistic vigilance. At some point, all of his abilities were going to be called on for crises that could break the worlds. Whether or not he would be able to deliver demigod-level miracles, as those multitudes of mystics and soothsayers have proclaimed for millennia, remained to be seen. Audric did not feel the full brunt of the pressure of their expectations necessarily, because he had always thought of himself as a mere vessel of the universe, not its mandated savior.
Contrary to the universal belief, he wasn’t the crucial piece.
Nonetheless, he wasn’t always as resigned to his destiny as this. He had been wrought to it as any average person would be once told he was supposed to wage war and defeat some unnamed ultimate maleficence. It was merely that he had learned to offset the surrealism of his legendary designations with the solid tedium of his everyday responsibilities, with the constant presence of people who still treated him like an ordinary person, particularly of Andromache, the woman who was able to love him as a mere man, in spite of it all.
Written in the stars, destined by fate, whatever fancy terminology they assigned to what they had. . . He was glad she was there, always, for she was his candle, his sole light, these long lonely nights, these foreshadows of a coming doom.
