Arima Soichiro,  having run on caffeine and a couple of hour’s sleep for almost two days, was ready to flop atop his desk when he remembered something he could no longer afford to postpone. Wearily, he rubbed away a yawn from his face and fished for his cell phone.

“Reiji,” he said, once he was connected. “It’s me.”

“Which ‘me’?” was the reply he made out from the cacophony of background noises.

“Me,” the detective answered shortly. “Soichiro.”

“Oh, that one—taxi! What time is it there? Three in the morning?”

“Yeah.”

“. . .You’re not out breaking happy-little-family, are you?”

“I’m rushing paper work for a huge case we just cracked, so can we lay off the repartee?”

“Touchy. Your refined Arima breeding really is overrated, you know?”

“Listen. I’m picking you up at the airport, then we’ll meet Yukino-san for dinner. She’s on-call the following day and you’d be off on your tour after that, so she won’t get to see you again, if we don’t push this. Asaba can just drop the kids off, wherever we decide to go.”

“Your wife’s brain is a marvel, as always. Has it had any glitches aside from the time she married you?”

“It’s morbidly fascinated over you.” The younger man was sarcastic.

“It’s part of my charm. I can hardly disappoint her, of course—31st street, please.”

“Good, so that’s set. Pick a place where we can meet.”

“Why?”

“Narita’s huge.”

“Seek and ye shall find.”

“Since when have you subscribed to Judeo-Christian nuggets of wisdom?”

“Never have. The bible is priceless literature, though. It peruses the depths of humanity’s capacity for depravity.”

“Birds of the same feather. . .” Soichiro ended the cliche with a yawn.

“You’re losing your edge. Get some sleep, boy.”

“And the rendezvous?”

“The usual place.”

“. . . Right.” Soichiro blinked sleepily. “Usual place.”

“You don’t have to make excuses to hear the voice of your daddy-dearest, you know.”

“It helps maintain my fragile mental stability,” Soichiro muttered. “See you.”

“Aa. Soon.”
