Animals in a snowy forest hide themselves well.
For months on end Rukia sought her zanpakutou in her dreams, trudging through the snow in bare feet. Little bright eyes watched her from the white-blanketed bushes, and little quick feet left their tracks in the snow, and wolves and foxes and bears stole through the forest . . .
. . . but nothing.
At last one night Rukia looked up, and finally she saw her, crossing the night sky in long flowing steps of whiteness, her sleeves great clouds of snow that fell like banners and whipped out behind her to lash the darkness like whips.
