In the past, she had never paid much attention to the large room next to her brother’s bedchambers, empty except for a closed display on the far wall. And on this night especially everything felt new and raw and cold as she padded across the mats, running her fingertips over the doors before she opened them and stared at the picture hung there.

She did not know later, how long she had stood there, arms loose at her sides, nor how long he had stood there watching her watching.

He was fully dressed, captain’s jacket hanging lank in the indoor air, sheathed sword cradled in his arms. A sweet scent lingered around him like cherry trees after a storm and Rukia came back to herself as an invisible hand caressed her cheek.

The lines on his face deepened as she looked at him, but he said nothing.

They closed the doors over the portrait together.
