[Aug. 31, 2006][original] The Final Night
Title: The Final Night
Day/Theme: Aug. 31, 2006 "Peace it is, till the raising of the dawn."
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Seif, Pavia, Li, Ran, etc.
Rating: PG
Author's note: With this piece, I have managed to accomplish my goal of writing about Sir Seif and his story for each theme/day of August! Yay!
Now, wow, am I worn out. ^^;
As day gave way to night, they settled down to rest. Although many of the archers and footsoldiers headed inside to rest, most of the commanders huddled out on the walls, afraid to stop watching the enemy. The fog was rolling in, and soon this mist would obscure the sight of the sentries. Harold de Portola yawned loudly and stretched his arms. Pavia gave him a severe look. "If you really need to sleep that badly, get off this wall and go inside. I don't need you dozing on my shoulder all night long."
"Well, if that's the case, don't mind if I do," the general replied and headed off around the western bend to the steps.
Pavia shook here head. "Fine." She crouched down and peered out at the Ligaian army's encampment. It appeared fairly still, with only the usual movements associated with the troops moving their equipment and eating around scattered campfires. She saw no particular reason to expect a surprise attack. She nodded at Seif, who was huddled beside a crate filled with flares, his purple cape wrapped around him like a blanket. Seif raised an eyebrow in return, silently questioning what she had seen. Pavia waved a gloved hand vaguely toward the ground below and shrugged. The Holy Knight closed his eyes and leaned his head against his shoulder. Like Pavia, he would stay outside and ready. However, he saw no reason he couldn't at least try to get some rest before the dawn came.
Stationed at equal intervals around the walltop, Li, Ran, Kiralesca, and Ginjo held their posts. Ginjo slept with his head tipped back and his mouth wide open. Kiralesca rubbed her cold arms with her hands and stared at the sleeping swordsman-sorceror. She felt the weight of the sling stones in the pouch at her side and wondered if she might be able to toss one this distance and hit him in the head. This was really no time for such fooling around though, so she refrained from any frivolousness and settled down to wait out the night.
Ran sat with his knees pulled up to his chest and rested his chin on his knees, gazing out at the misty sky and the vague flickers of starlight that made their way through the fog. He thought about Aska, waiting for him back in Messina. He wondered if the end to this conflict would be the right time to marry her.
Li was also consumed in thought as he sat on the wall atop an unmarked barrel. He considered his young friends back in Messina and what life might be like if Ran actually settled down and married Aska. Would he still work as a knight? How would that change their relationship? Turning to more immediate matters, he tapped his boot against the barrel and heard the tell-tale swish of liquid. The real question now was the contents of the barrel...beer or vinegar?
"Sir Seif!" called a cheerful voice, and all heads turned to Leila, who was marching up the steps, followed closely by Tetsu and Rowan. The pretty Knight Hunter carried a tin kettle wrapped in a towel. Rowan was holding a tray of cups.
"What's that?" Pavia inquired as they passed by her to reach Seif.
"Hot cocoa," the Cambrian informed her.
She jumped up from her place to follow the trio. "Is there any for me?"
"Plenty for all of us," Leila declared happily, as she poured the first steaming cup and handed it to Seif. The other defenders crowded eagerly around her to receive some of this unexpected pleasure, and Seif smiled at Leila's generous nature and the overall good feeling of camaraderie.
The final battles of the conflict would come with the dawn.
