When Shunrei whispered into his shoulder that he must never, ever leave again, he squeezed her arm wordlessly instead of replying. Before, her heart might have grown heavy with disappointment; tonight there was only a pang that was not quite sorrow.

My brothers and I lead a hard, demanding life, he started to say.

Lives are short, she protested. I can't bear to see you spending all of yours separated from things that can provide you with warmth, love, happiness - peace.

He nodded patiently, and she wondered if he had not noticed or been much affected by the tears in her voice, He could be impossible sometimes. Either that, or she was being continuously selfish.

I will never leave you alone, he said. Do you believe that?

I don't know, she shot back, resenting him for having seen through her. I honestly don't. There, I'm sulking.

Yes, you do know, he said, gathering her close, making her cry for real this time, crying for them, for the undying spirit that got him and his brothers tangled up in this mess in the first place, for a millennia-old faith that would never wither.
