[Aug. 28, 2006][original] Waltz Without the Music
Title: Waltz Without the Music
Day/Theme: Aug. 28, 2006 "In sorrow to be here again, I am loving you."
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Seif and Rowan
Rating: PG
"Shall we waltz?" Rowan asked and extended his black-gloved hand, holding it open toward Seif.
Seif fidgeted with the fraying edge of his purple cape, face downcast. He rubbed the well-worn fabric between his thumb and forefinger and barely thought about the soft familiarity of it that he usually enjoyed.
"Come on, Seif," Rowan urged, pulling Seif's hand away from the cape and gripping it in his own. "It's not disrespectful to her memory. Waltzes are solemn by nature."
Seif did not get up, but a flicker of annoyance crossed his face, "How do you know waltzes are solemn? You didn't even know how to dance one until I taught you." He paused and his voice grew quieter as he consciously chose not to grow angry over such a ridiculous matter. "....Nevermind," he muttered and looked down again.
The Black Knight was glad enough to have induced a response from his friend. Rowan stared at the hand he held. Seif's fingers were limp in his grasp. The Holy Knight seemed to have been drained of all energy. It was as though he were a completely different man than he was the day before.
"Let's waltz!" Rowan practically demanded and used the hand in his hold to jerk Seif from the cot to his feet. Seif stumbled forward, but he did not fall. He gazed down into Rowan's eyes with a fiercely cold frown, but as Rowan placed his gloved hands on Seif's shoulders, the Messinan Knight followed his lead, falling smoothly into the steps of the waltz.
"There's no music," Seif said plainly.
"There was never any music before," Rowan reminded him.
"No, there was always music before," Seif corrected him softly, "In my mind there was an orchestra to accompany us, but now they're silenced. The music is gone."
Rowan began humming a mysterious measured tune to match their movements.
"You've gotten really good," Seif remarked, clearly more cheerfully than his words just moments earlier, "You'll be making the women swoon left and right when you get home to Cambria."
Rowan's eyes smiled, but he did not stop humming.
