Only when she stopped fiddling with the pajama buttons did she remember that she had never given him her phone number; short of coming to her house or her school, he would have no way to contact her.

There's always the phonebook, she told herself, and repeated the words, to see if they sounded more convincing the second time around. Then it occurred to her that everybody - him included - was of the same opinion regarding what was best for her.

An ache started at the base of her spine. Absently, almost disinterestedly, she pressed her palm against it.

Girls with murder in their eyes. Girls who sat inside theaters and brooded. (How would he manage without her?)

She got up from the bed and went to her desk. Her pencil and notebook were still inside the drawer, where she had last seen them. Things should be so simple.
