Sir Michaelis had resolved to win the war once and for all. His childhood had been overshadowed by the continuous conflict between Ligaia and Messina. The war had taken away the most important person in his young life- General Father Alywin Luseuth-Kelyano, his teacher and care-giver, a gentle old man whose life had been dedicated to the defense of Messina from the day he was chosen to train as a Holy Knight to the day he died in battle. Michaelis had learned so much from Alwyin in those few years...

When he considered why he wished so strongly to conquer the enemy, it simply came down to duty and determination. Generations of Holy Knights had given up their lives for the cause, Holy Mothers had risen and fallen, the peasants and townsfolk had supported the government in all its actions...

And the Ligaian citizens deserved peace as well. Their kings and generals had come and gone and for their efforts, the people of both lands had suffered. Michaelis himself had suffered at the time. But now he was numb. He believed that he no longer could feel anything.

In a few short months of his childhood, a polite young woman who gave him cookies, the successor to the Holy Mother, was killed, Uncle Alywin was cut down, and two of the current Holy Knights, Sir Li and Sir Ran, met their doom at the hands of one General Jiiru Pohscratt. It was a terrible loss for the country, and for the blond boy himself. The last of the Holy Knights, Sir Seif, a cautious and trembling man, was allowed to retire to a small farmhouse in an open part of the country. After this, Seif was left basically to himself but for the occasional letter from General de Portola or Pavia. It was probably the first time the future Holy Knights were not personally trained by a past Holy Knight while one still lived.

Michaelis did not regret Seif's lack of involvement in his training. While Alywin had been a gentle man in his personal doings, in all matters of the blade he was deadly serious and rigorous in his efforts to make Michaelis practice and remember everything he taught him. Seif, who had bumbled through Michaelis' childhood as a sort of bumbling, friendly fool who just happened to carry a sword, was gentle even in battle when compared to the priest-general. Michaelis wondered what holy miracle had made this jumpy, wide-eyed man the one who survived in the end. Nothing about him suggested he had any inner reserve that the others did not possess... When considering this trail of thought, Michaelis usually concluded that as Uncle Alywin had raised and trained him, he had also raised and trained Seif years before, while still in his prime, and that should account for something.

And despite his general lack of faith in the personal attributes of his fellow new knights, he could see their skill with weapons clearly enough. He trusted in their physical strength. He just hoped that in a situation of emotion that it would never all come down to them.

Sir Favio was a broad-shouldered, axe-swinging Cambrian. With his pig-tailed hair and eternal smile, Favio was a bit of a childish day-dreamer for Michaelis' tastes, but his sheer endurance and power in combat were undeniable. At the very least, Michaelis figured that Favio's lackadaisical nature would serve to confuse an enemy about his true skill.

The other newly appointed knight, Sir Duncan, was more of a problem... He was a slim, blond Ligaian, rescued from the ruins of a border city by Sir Seif during the past war. Out of gratitude to Seif, he had fallen into the life of training and practicing quite readily and for many years, Michaelis had viewed him as a rival or equal in skill with the sword and bow. However, while involved in a scouting mission near the border while still a trainee, he was kidnapped by the Knight Hunters. Bizarrely enough, Rayno, the Knight Hunter's commander, remembered Duncan from when he was a child. This was enough to make even the heart of such a cold soul tremble and instead of killing Duncan as the knight hunters usually would have done, they merely injured him. It was a very tricky wound, though not nearly life-threatening. Duncan's arm, slashed near the elbow, never healed correctly and he was left unable to properly handle a sword. He could not use a bow at all. All large movements of his right arm he carried out rather awkwardly and becoming so disabled after years of training left him understandably depressed.

As we had come so near to being knighted, no one else was anywhere near prepared to step up and take Duncan's place. Out of courtesy to him, he was knighted along with, but since then he put his sights on simply joining the priesthood as there was no way for him to be a full knight. Michaelis felt sorry enough for Duncan to allow him to tag along with him, but the wilted attitude of the failed knight was somewhat annoying.

Michaelis could only hope that Duncan's eventual replacement would be skilled and unsentimental. He had a slight fear that he was going to need old Sir Seif on his side to win the war. Ten years ago he had told Uncle Alwyin that he would force a peace on Ligaia if need be. And as the Ligaians mobilized again he knew this was the time to do it.

How would he win?

By any means possible.
