[Aug. 25, 2006][original] Better Rain Than Snow
Title: Better Rain Than Snow
Day/Theme: Aug. 25, 2006 "May the morning clouds refresh you at this distance, and may abundant rains comfort you forever!"
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Alywin, Li, Ran
Rating: PG
It was not cold enough to snow yet in Messina, and Alywin with glad. The mud created by the rains was not what he would have wished for the troops to be marching through, but it was still preferable to snow. As they crossed the border into Ligaian territory, the morning drizzle provided a comforting cover for their movements.
"Awfully quite out here, isn't it?" Ran observed nervously.
"Why aren't they protecting the border?" Li added, turning to Alywin for an answer.
"I think they'd rather draw us further in and try to trap us, or at least confront us on more familiar terrain," the priest-general replied calmly. "The skirmishes earlier this month took place on Messinan soil and the Ligaians were routed pretty quickly. It's been too many years since they captured an new territory long enough to learn its topography."
The knights stood in silence considering this information as the rain pinged off their half-armored forms and splashed in puddles. A cool breeze slid down from the mountains, turning the water icy as it blew diagonally against the Messinan Second Army. Li sighed and then smiled, "Well, since you know that, General, I suppose we won't get trapped."
Alywin nodded sagely and water dripped off the tip of his nose. "Unfortunately, I can't be fully prepared for every possibility, but I do my best to have tactics in mind to counter all the most obvious tactics, at least."
"You are irreplaceable, General," Ran beamed. Li nodded heartily in agreement.
The old man felt himself warmed by their sentiments, making him numb to the splatter of the rain. "And both of you are so good to me."
