This was, she thought, one of those annoying times when the end of the dream equaled the end of the road.

The man on the bed was quiet and wan, busy with his own dying. He had no time for girls who had walked for miles chasing a memory and a warm, life-flavored fragrance. She, in her turn, had been too stubborn to contemplate this particular probability.

"Was she a bad woman?" she said aloud to the walls. "Were you afraid I would grow up to be a nag, or a bitch?"

Her ears caught the far-off sound of waves crashing against the rocks, but that, too, might have been what he was; mere shadows in the sun. His thin breathing was pervasive in the cramped space, infuriating. She stepped closer to the bed, wishing she could shake with rage, vaguely grateful that she was not crying.
