The ladies waxed poetic when he was nearby, and Sai, knowing better than to pretend ignorance, smiled with them, not at them. He listened with unfeigned politeness and commented after they were done, patiently waiting for an offer of a game of Go.

"Catching the sight of you is no less than witnessing the enhancement of nature," one of them gushed once, while Sai was debating with himself which move to take next. "The color of sunlight has never seemed so rich in hues, the glow of the day's end never so translucent."

"You are terribly generous with your praise." Sai frowned at the board, eyes darting between two points.

"His presence would shed beauty even on a battlefield," put in another, not to be outdone. "Like water and light in the midst of all the carnage and blood-red ground."

The first one sighed dramatically. "Too bad he lives for this game and only for this game."

Sai picked up a stone and laid it down. Another sigh from the ladies, and he was briefly curious whether it was of admiration or disappointment.
